The Afterglow's Gone

Paul Maholm lasted 2-2/3 innings; that should tell you all you need to know about today's game. He gave up eight runs (six earned) on seven hits, including four doubles and a homer, and a pair of walks with a K.

Maholm surrendered four consecutive run-scoring hits with two out in the second, and the Bucs were down 8-1 after three innings.

It was 8-4 after five frames, and that's how it ended. The Pirates were 3-for-14 with RISP, committed two errors, and had a runner picked off first. The Rox stole two bases off Dewey. Not a pretty day after a lovely night.

The only bright spot was the beleaguered bullpen; they held the Rox scoreless for six innings. Daniel McCutchen pitched 4-1/3 scoreless innings while Chris Resop and Chan Ho Park each added a scoreless frame.

The Bucs are off tomorrow, and Jeff Karstens takes on Wade LeBlanc at San Diego on Tuesday.
