Bucs Shut Out Yankees

Hey, maybe the most of the starters were out for both sides, but a well pitched game this early in the Grapefruit season is still a sweet sight as Pittsburgh scored in the sixth and seventh to take a 2-0 win home against the Pinstripes.

Pedro Ciriaco doubled off the wall to tally Jeremy Farrell, pinch-running for Chris Snyder, and a Josh Fields sac fly brought home Garrett Jones, who walked and went to third on a Steve Pearce double. J-Mac, Aaron Thompson, Chris Resop, Daniel McCutchen and Danny Moskos allowed just four hits while striking out eight and walking one.

The go-go Bucs looked like the bad News Bears today on the basepaths today; Snyder was nailed on a strike 'em out, throw 'em out DP, Alex Presley was caught stealing and John Bowker was gunned trying to stretch a single into a double. Steve Pearce swiped a sack, so it looks like his chronically weak knee has no aftereffects from last season's surgery.

Ross Ohlendorf will make his spring debut against the Twins tomorrow at McKechnie Field. Lefty Brian Duensing will open for the Twin Cities.

-- The Pirates officially announced that they signed 20-year Cuban RHP Cesar Lopez to a minor league contract. Jorge Ebro of El Nuevo Herald reports that the deal is worth $600K in a moved that was leaked earlier in the month..

The 20-year-old was born in Havana, Cuba, and now lives in Nuevo Leon, Mexico. Rene Gayo says: “He has an above average sinker, and a fastball that can reach 94 [mph] ...”

-- Evan Meek threw with no problems today. There's no word yet on Joe Biemel's MRI. We expect the results to be announced tomorrow.
