Notes

Today's game will match the Cards' RHP Chris Carpenter (5-7, 3.69) and the Bucs' LHP Paul Maholm (6-9, 3.06). First pitch is at 7:05 PM, and the game will be shown on Root Sports.

The lineup: Alex Presley LF, Chase d'Arnaud 3B, Neil Walker 2B, Andrew McCutchen CF, Lyle Overbay 1B, Garrett Jones RF, Ronny Cedeno SS, Mike McKenry C, Paul Maholm P.

Cedeno is thrown right into the fray, and d'Arnaud moves to third. Steve Pearce isn't in the lineup tonight; that's no big surprise with a righty on the mound.

  • The Cardinal series is sold out, so if you don't have your ticket in hand, you're outta luck.
  • The Bucs made it official early this afternoon. The club reinstated SS Ronny Cedeno and UT Steve Pearce from the DL and have optioned RHP Chris Leroux to AAA. We'd expect that they and RHP Jason Grilli would be available to play tonight (they are).
  • The national media is just catching on that the Bucs aren't in on Carlos Beltran. The Pirates were out of the picture the minute the Mets said they would eat some salary for prospects; Pittsburgh could only compete if he were a straight salary dump, and that would have been iffy. Everything we've seen and heard indicates that the FO will have to be gobsmacked to give up an elite prospect.
