Liriano v Williams

Francisco Liriano (5-3, 2.44) takes on Jerome Williams (5-2, 3.14) today against the Angels. The Cisco Kid hasn't been very lights out against LA. He's 1-3 with a 7.06 ERA at Angel Stadium. Williams is a spot starter, and he'll be replacing Jason Vargas tonight, who was placed on the DL with a blood clot in his armpit area. The game starts at 10:05 and will be aired on Root Sports and 93.7 The Fan. It's also tonight's free game on free on MLB TV.

Pirate lineup: Starling Marte LF, Russell Martin C, Andrew McCutchen CF, Garrett Jones DH, Pedro Alvarez 3B, Gaby Sanchez 1B, Neil Walker 2B, Travis Snider RF and Jordy Mercer SS.

The Tony Sanchez plans were disrupted a bit when Vargas, the Angel lefty who was supposed to start tonight, went on the DL and was replaced by a RHP. Maybe he'll get a shot tomorrow behind the dish.

Angels lineup: Peter Bourjos CF, Mike Trout LF, Albert Pujols DH, Mark Trumbo 1B, Howie Kendrick 2B, Alberto Callaspo 3B, Erick Aybar SS, Chris Iannetta C and JB Shuck RF.

Different look from last night with a lefty on the bump.

  • Josh Hamilton will miss the series against the Pirates because of a right wrist injury.
  • Jeanmar Gomez is ready to return. If the bullpen isn't abused during the Anaheim series, he'll probably be held back until Wednesday to start against Seattle.
  • Elias Sports Bureau: Gerrit Cole is one of only two overall #1 MLB draft picks to win each of his first three big league starts. The other was Ben McDonald of the 1990 Orioles.
  • Some more Gerrit Cole stuff: he threw 8 pitches at 100+ MPH Friday; all the other starters in MLB this year have combined for one (Matt Harvey), per Buster Olney. John Buccigrossi added Cole's 101 MPH fastball last night was the fastest pitch thrown by a starter not named Justin Verlander in the past five seasons.
  • Stolmy Pimentel is scheduled to take the bump at Indy.
  • Jim Callis of Baseball America tweeted that the Bucs inked prep RHP Neil Kozikowski for $425K, considerably over the $155,400 slot value for an eighth rounder. Not to fear; they still have some slush money left in the pool.
