Johnson v Kelly; Snider and Farnsworth Join Team

Kris Johnson (0-1, 3.00) hopes to apply the broom to St. Louis and Joe Kelly  (6-3, 2.91) this afternoon. It will be Johnson's first MLB start. The lefty has six innings under his belt in an outing against Arizona in an outing that saw him go five scoreless before giving up a pair in his sixth frame. The Cardinals are 8-1 with Kelly since he became a regular in the rotation in early July. He's gone 6-0 with a 2.24 ERA during that span. Storms are due off and on today, but it is the Cards final game of their last trip to town, so they'll do whatever they can to get it in.

The game is scheduled to start at 1:35 and will be carried by Root Sports and 93.7 The Fan.

Pirate lineup: Neil Walker 2B, Garrett Jones RF, Andrew McCutchen CF, Pedro Alvarez 3B, Marlon Byrd LF, Justin Morneau 1B, John Buck C, Jordy mercer SS and Kris Johnson P.

Lotta shakeup to get Morneau into the lineup, but also a lotta pop.

Cardinal lineup: Matt Carpenter 2B, Shane Robinson RF, Matt Holliday LF, Allen Craig 1B, Yadier Molina C, David Freese 3B, Jon Jay CF, Pete Kozma SS and Joe Kelly P.

  • Travis Snider came off the DL while LHP Kris Johnson and RHP Kyle Farnsworth joined the Bucs from Indy today. C Tony Sanchez, LHP Jeff Locke, RHP Jared Hughes and OF Andrew Lambo should be back on Tuesday after Altoona's season ends, with more guys available (Brandon Cumpton, Ryan Reid, Chase d'Arnaud, etc.) after Indianapolis' playoffs are done. Also, Jason Grilli, and J-Mac are on track to come off the DL shortly, with Starling Marte due back a little further down the road and Wandy Rodriguez possible but unlikely to return. Wandy told the media that beside inflammation, Dr. Andrews said he has arthritis in his left elbow.
  • The Pirates have outhomered St. Louis 18-3 in 15 meetings this season.
  • A win this afternoon would give the Bucs their first sweep of the Cards since September, 2008.
  • Karen Price of the Tribune Review has a nice piece on the maturation of Clint Hurdle.
  • James McDonald has moved up his rehab regimen; he'll start at High A Bradenton today.
  • Jameson Taillon will start for Indy today. He's 1-2/3.77 for the Tribe after going 4-7/3.67 for the Curve.
