I still believe they wanted to keep at least Jay Bay until the pitching turned entirely sour.
The only staff that I could find nearly as bad was the 1954 Pirates that lost 104 games. They had two 36-year olds, over the hillers Murry Dickson and Johnny Lindell, and a pair of up and coming youngsters, Bob Friend and El Roy Face, who was starting back then. The team ERA then was 5.22; this year's version has a 5.24 ERA.Ron Ieracihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08784507810080514099noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6207200414495313452.post-4354882503304846792008-08-04T20:50:00.000-04:002008-08-04T20:50:00.000-04:00I'll say it again: this year's pitching staff, top...I'll say it again: this year's pitching staff, top to bottom, is THE worst I've ever seen in my 30 years of watching Pirates baseball. Not even in the depths of the scandal-ridden mid-80s was it this bad. Not even in the worst of the Littlefield years was it this bad.

Utterly. Totally. Brutally. Horribly. Hopelessly. Bad.

That, boys and girls, is why the Nady-Marte and Bay trades went down the way they did.WilliamJPellashttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12774466220683142262noreply@blogger.com
