While Paulino definitely didn't stay in any kind of shape---at least during his second year in the bigs---and while his defense was poor to mediocre, he can definitely hit. At least, he can definitely hit compared with most catchers.

It must be said, too, in all fairness, that Paulino has done nothing but hustle and hit since his demotion.

I'm not so much against him being traded as I am against him being traded for a guy who is probably a lesser player. I mean, Jaramillo looks....okay. He gets good marks for his defense, and of course that's the most important thing with a catcher. And given the general ineptitude of most catchers with the bat, if you get a guy who is even mediocre with a stick in his hands, usually you're doing alright, particularly with your number two guy. I also like the fact that Jaramillo will go head to head with Robinzon Diaz. Diaz should win the job, but competition is a good thing.

I just would rather have seen us maximize an asset like Paulino, but he wasn't going to play in Pittsburgh, so I guess we take what we can get and we move on.WilliamJPellashttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12774466220683142262noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6207200414495313452.post-63128100337445292412008-12-11T19:33:00.000-05:002008-12-11T19:33:00.000-05:00Yah, Jim, it's an OK deal. At least Diaz will have someone to push him.Ron Ieracihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08784507810080514099noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6207200414495313452.post-14122909667846652082008-12-11T14:54:00.000-05:002008-12-11T14:54:00.000-05:00Nice write-up. Paulino had to go, and this gives us another option for backing up Doumit.Jim Rosatihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02994492559337529154noreply@blogger.com
