- The Pirates optioned Daniel Moskos
to Indy yesterday, clearing the way for the expected return of Joe
Beimel. Ronny Cedeno should be back this weekend; Jose Tabata isn't
thought to be far behind.
- Ross Ohlendorf will
finally begin his rehab at Class A Bradenton. He'll probably return to
the team in early August, and we'd expect that he'll join the pen. He'll join Tabata and Jason Jaramillo, who are also rehabbing in Florida.
- Steve Pearce was
moved from Bradenton to Indy to continue his rehab, so his return may be
a little sooner than expected, perhaps as early as next week.
- The Pirates agreed to terms with third-round pick
Alex Dickerson, a first baseman from Indiana. The All-Big 10 selection hit .367 with 10 doubles, nine home runs, 49 RBIs and 33 runs scored in 54 games. He'll report to State College. Contract terms weren't announced.
- As happens when the draftees start to roll in, guys that never quite panned out get their release. The Pirates set free RHP Brandon Holden, RHP Brent Klinger, C Joey Schoenfeld, 1B Billy Nowlin, OF Ping-Hung Chi, and OF Daan Cornelissen according to Baseball America. Holden and Scofield were 13th and 10th round draft picks.
- Some former Pirate fringe players who also got their walking papers: Colorado released 3B Josh Fields so he could sign with Yomiuri in the Japanese League; he was tearing it up in AAA. OF Brandon Jones was released by Milwaukee, as was the Mariners RHP Denny Bautista, who signed with Hanwha of the Korean league. RHP Chris Bootcheck was let go by Tampa Bay.
"Somehow we have developed this large contingent of know-it-all baseball fans who bay like wounded coyotes at any mention of wins, losses, RBI or batting average. I never know whether I should blame myself for this or not.." (Bill James)
