Lineup, Notes, News - Correia Gets The Start, Walker Back

RHP Kevin Correia (9-7, 4.56) takes on the Padres RHP Edinson Volquez (7-9, 4.31). KC worked a couple of innings yesterday, so he's likely to be tag teamed with one of the new call-ups, LHP Justin Wilson or RHP Kyle McPherson. The last time Volquez faced the Bucs was in Pittsburgh when he was chased early, giving up a six-pack in 3-1/3 frames, and he's been beat around some in August. The game begins at 10:05 and will be shown on Root Sports.

San Diego snapped a five-game losing string with a 7-1 win over the Giants on Sunday at Petco Park. We'll see how yesterday's 19-inning affair affected the Pirates and what kind of roster they have for SD tonight. The Padres are Pittsburgh's albatross; they're 15-3 during their last 18 games against the Pirates.

The lineup: Jose Tabata LF, Travis Snider RF, Andrew McCutchen CF, Garrett Jones 1B, Neil Walker 2B, Pedro Alvarez 3B, Clint Barmes SS, Rod Barajas C, Kevin Correia P.

Nice to see The Kid back in the lineup, sooner than we expected. And we thought Snider would get some downtime with his leg banged up, but he's good to go; his injury yesterday was just a cramp. Hot Rod is catching; The Fort is probably still napping after 19 innings behind the dish yesterday.

  • In case you're wondering why KC, it's simple: he volunteered. Hurdle took up the offer, as he'd probably rather try to get some innings in early with Correia than start Wilson or McPherson, both making their first appearance in the show. The proof will be in the pudding as to whether that was a wise move or not; the skipper has a distinct preference for playing vets over pups.
  • According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Correia will be the first Pirate pitcher to go in relief one day and start the next since Pascual Perez (who faced one batter in relief) in 1981.
  • Chris Resop and Jared Hughes are not available to pitch out of the pen tonight. Chad Qualls won't be reinstated back to the roster from his bereavement leave until tomorrow.
  • If you missed the moves, the Bucs called up LHP Justin Wilson and RHP Kyle McPherson, both starters, from Indy. Jordy Mercer went on paternity leave and Juan Cruz was DFA'ed, creating roster room. The Bucs will have a short bench again tonight.
  • Lyle Overbay signed a minor league deal with Atlanta, so that last series of the season could feature Paul Maholm, Matt Diaz, Jack Wilson, Eric Hinske and Overbay against their old teammates.
