Pitchers: LHP Hector Santiago (0-1, 5.60) ends the season series v RHP Jameson Taillon (2-3, 4.08). Jamo had to leave his last outing with a cut (not a blister) on his finger, so there will be a little anxiety over that. His pitching looks to be on track; they're also be some anxiety to see if that trend continues. This will be his first outing against Chicago. Santiago is making a spot start as the originally scheduled Carson Fulmer was pushed back a day. He's the ChiSox swing man, making his third start in 11 appearances. He's had issues with the long ball this year, and been much more successful from the pen, with an 11.25 ERA in his two starts. Santiago faced Pittsburgh once earlier this year, tossing a clean inning of relief; he has one start against the Buccos, too, in 2016. He lasted four innings and was charged with three runs.
Notes:
- Fran's injury last night is just a bruise w/no structural damage, so that's good news. Starling is being treated for "side and lower" back pain; no definite word on the severity of that yet. The trainer said they were assessing him for availability (he was in the clubhouse, albeit wrapped up), so there's that and the early signs point towards so far, so good *knock on wood*. Should be at least a complete day off for the duo, so it's a pretty short bench. Clint added that if Marte missed a day or three, S-Rod goes to center; he's not moving Gregory.
- Gregory Polanco has banged out an extra base hit in five consecutive games.
- Starling extended his hitting streak to nine games before exiting with a sore side last night.
- The Chisox have lost 12-of-14 games. The Pirates have won seven straight against them, dating back to 2010.
