Pitchers: RHP Joe Musgrove (8-12/4.74) starts it off against LHP Jason Vargas (6-6/3.99). Joe just can't seem to string together any consistency. However, he was Good Moose in his last outing against the Phils in late July, holding them to an unearned run on two hits with eight K in a six-inning stint. Vargas has been the opposite, a dependable six-inning guy who keeps the club in the game and is quite good at times, holding foes to two runs or fewer in 12 of his 23 outings. He took on the Bucs in late July as a Met, getting the win after going 5-2/3 IP while surrendering three runs on six hits.
Notes:
- The Pirates were 1-2 against the Phils in mid-July at PNC.
- Corey Dickerson is batting .275 with three homers and 19 RBI in his 18 games with Philadelphia. He joined Jared Hughes, Sean Rodriguez and Phil Gosselin as ex-Bucs who are now Phils, with Juan Nicasio (10-day) and Cutch (60-day) on their IL.

- Bradenton 1B Mason Martin was picked as Baseball America's Pirates Minor League Player of the Year. His 34 homers show his potential; his 31% K-rate shows where progress must be made. They also touch on a couple of up-and-coming twirlers.
- Indy 3B Ke’Bryan Hayes was named the International League POTW and Greensboro SS Ji-Hwan Bae was named the same for the South Atlantic League.
