Notes: September Shuffle, Farm News, Formers On the Move

The roster bumps up to 28...

Notes:

  • RHP Shelby Miller, 30, and RHP Max Kranick, 24, were called up to fill the September roster. Miller is auditioning for a Chris Stratton-type role and will work exclusively from the pen while Kranick was immediately plugged into the rotation. Miller set a team record with his 9/1 appearance, becoming the 58th different Pirate used this year. He tied another franchise mark by becoming the 34th pitcher called on during this campaign, so no matter what, his September stint is already one for the record books. Kranick was optioned back down to Indy after his start and UT Phil Evans, 29, was added to the roster.
  • Bucco Cs set a modern-era (1901 onward) record by going 175 consecutive games without allowing a passed ball, topping the old mark set by Montreal in 1978-79. Jake Stallings and Michael Perez did this season's work, while Jake, John Ryan Murphy and Andrew Susac (one game) handled the duties last year.

  • Greensboro 2B Nick Gonzales won the Hi-A Player of the Month award. His August line: .364 BA, 28 RBI, 24 runs scored, 10 homers & 10 doubles. He was the Bucs' top pick in 2020.
  • It was a good month for young Bucs - Bradenton OF Jack Herman claimed the Lo-A Player of the Month award. He batted .326 with 23 RBI, 18 runs scored and five homers last month. The 21-year-old was a late pick in the 2018 draft as a HS player.
  • Confirmed: C Henry Davis (right oblique), the Pirates 2021 top pick, is going to be out for 4-to-6 weeks, ending his first pro campaign at eight games and 31 plate appearances.
  • The Blue Jays signed recently released OF Gregory Polanco to a minor-league deal; makes sense that he would go to an AL team where he can focus on hitting. If he gets called up, he'll recognize a couple of faces in the clubhouse - former outfield teammates Corey Dickerson and Jarrod Dyson are Blue Jays. He might recall Joakim Soria and Reese McGuire, too.
  • The USA 18U Baseball team named ex-Bucco SS "Jumping Jack Flash" Wilson as one of its coaches.
  • RHP Kyle Crick was released by the White Sox; he had been pitching in AAA for Chicago after being let go by the Pirates. Crick, 28, went 2-0/0.87 in eight games out of Charlotte’s bullpen (10-1/3 IP/15 K/3 BB), so by-the-numbers, it was a surprise that he was cut loose.
