Notes:
- While minor league ball is still on track, prospects protected on the 40-man roster aren't eligible to participate. For the Pirates, that group in purgatory includes SS Oneil Cruz, OF Travis Swaggerty, SS Liover Peguero, RHP Roansy Contreras and RHP Miguel Yajure.
- The Pirates signed 31-year-old RHP Jerad Eickhoff, who worked for the Mets last year, mainly in AAA, and the Phils prior to that. The starter has a 21-32-1/4.35 MLB slash in 80 starts/460 IP, but has posted a 7-15/5.21 line since 2017.
- The two sides couldn't reach a deal on the MLB's self-imposed deadline of February 28th, but soldiered on for another day. No diff; the union was basically offered status quo and rejected the owner's "best and final" offer, so here comes a short season. The Pirates lost their home-opening set against the Cards and ensuing road trip to Cincy, both division matchups, when Rob Manfred announced the cancelation of the first two series of the year across the board with no makeups.
- After a two-day break, the lead negotiators for the MLBPA & MLB sat together once again. They reportedly, per Jon Heyman, agreed to ban shifts, implement a pitch clock, and make the bases larger in 2023 while nixing robo umps. On economic issues, MLB is holding tight to the old CBA template with a couple of minor adjustments, and more April games may be sacrificed before any signatures get exchanged.
