Notes: Brutal Week; Davis On The Way; Bullpen Goes On IL As Roster Churn Continues; Minor News

On the road, ouch...

Notes:

  • The Bucs went to Chicago and watched their bullpen throw BP to the Cubbies after short starts as they were swept, losing 11-3, 10-6 and 7-2. Then they had a drunk driver behind the wheel as they rode a rental bus to Milwaukee, where they got swept again. Nothing like facing division foes and falling flat on your face. Pitching is becoming an increasingly sore spot, as is clutch hitting.
  • C Henry Davis is expected to be promoted top the big club today, so stay tuned... Shelty said C's Austin Hedges and Jason Delay will both remain on the roster, so one storyline will be how the Pirates fit Davis into the lineup.

  • RHP Colin Holderman was placed on the 15-day IL with right wrist inflammation; RHP Yerry De Los Santos was called up. Then LHP Rob Zastryzny joined him on the IL with forearm inflammation and RHP right-hander Carmen Mlodzinski got the call up. The 24-year-old was the 31st pick in the 2020 draft and had a line of 2-2-1/3.16 w/11 K per nine IP. The hits kept coming - LHP Jose Hernandez (calf strain) was placed on the 15-day IL on Sunday and LHP Ryan Borucki was brought up. He has spent parts of five seasons in MLB (10-9/4.45/96 appearances), mostly with Toronto, and has a line of 1-0/0.00 at Indy in eight outings.
  • OF Canaan Smith-Njigba was optioned to Indy to make room for RHP Osvaldo Bido. RHP Chase De Jong cleared waivers and was outrighted off the roster. Also, RHP Tyler Chatwood was released; he had two scoreless outings at Indy after coming off rehab.
  • RHP Max Kranick, a year removed from TJ surgery, is on schedule for recovery and should begin a rehab assignment sometime in August.
  • OF Travis Swaggerty can't win; he's back on the IL with vertigo-type symptoms.
  • RHP Tom Harrington was named Pitcher of the Week in the Sally League after tossing seven shutout innings while fanning eight for Greensboro. A supplemental first-rounder from Campbell U in the 2022 draft, the 21-year-old is 4-1/2.27 for the Grasshoppers and Bradenton, where he started the season, after 10 starts.
  • RHP Greiber Mendez was awarded the Dominican Summer League Pitcher of the Week. In two outings last week, he pitched a total of innings without an earned run (he gave two unearned tallies). The 19-year-old Venezuelan was signed in 2021.
