And the countdown continues...
Pirates Stuff:
- LF Tommy Pham and IF Jared Triolo have been named finalists for the Rawlings Gold Glove award. Pham has never won the honor while Triolo earned his first Gold Glove last year in the utility category. Also getting a nod was 3B Ke'Bryan Hayes, now a Red.
- Mark Polishuk of MLB Trade Rumors believes the Bucs will look for "Spencer Horwitz-type players ...this isn’t necessarily a bad thing since Horwitz had a good year, and obtaining controllable young hitters is something the Pirates should absolutely be doing. Of course, what they also 'should' be doing is being willing to spend more on hitting. Until they do so, however, I’ll continue to assume they’ll keep looking for cost-effective bats rather than more proven talent."
- The Pirates claimed OF Will Robertson, 27, off waivers from the White Sox. He hit .289/20 HR in 89 AAA games but batted just .129 in 70 MLB ABs during his 2025 MLB debut. UT Ryan Kreidler was DFA'ed to clear a 40-man spot and was claimed by the Twins.
- Fast starter: OF Esmerlyn Valdez has played eight games in the AFL while batting .500 (10-for-20) and homering seven times with 12 runs/13 RBI. He's struck out three times and drawn 13 walks with the Salt River Rafters.
MLB Stuff:
- The Dodgers swept the Brew Crew in the NLCS while Toronto stormed back from a 3-1 hole to force Seattle into a seventh game tonight.
- San Diego Padres manager Mike Shildt announced he is stepping down after two years, citing the grind. He had two years remaining on his contract after he skippered the Friars to a 183-141 slate and two playoff finishes.
- IF Chris Owings, 34, retired after 11 MLB campaigns. His last big-league posting came in 2023 with Pittsburgh.
- JR House, who was a Pirates prospect and had a cup of joe with the Pirates a decade or so ago, has left the Reds coaching staff to join the D-Backs. He's keeping the same role as a third base coach.
