Bucs - Astros

The Bucs open a three game home stand today, beginning with the Houston Astros. Kyle McPherson will take the bump against the 'Stros John Ely. The game starts at 1:05 and will be aired on KDKA-AM 1020.

Lineup: Jose Tabata LF, Clint Barmes SS, Andrew McCutchen CF, Pedro Alvarez 3B, Neil Walker 2B, Garrett Jones 1B, Brad Hawpe DH, Jerry Sands RF and Tony Sanchez C.

Hey, the big boy lineup (kinda)! Pedro is at cleanup, swapping lineup spots with Jones. Barmes is in the two hole as Snider/Marte aren't starting.

Pitchers: Kyle McPherson, Jason Grilli, Tony Watson, Justin Wilson, Bryan Morris and Kyle Waldrop.

Kyle and the bullpen at work today. It'll be interesting to see who gets stretched for a couple of innings; Wilson and Waldrop are the likeliest suspects.

  • Russell Martin was supposed to catch today, but informed Clint Hurdle he wasn't ready yet. The skipper instead gave him the day off after he DH'ed yesterday.
  • Ali Soltis, who was rostered to catch for Mexico in the WBC, will stay in Florida with Pittsburgh. He's suffering from back spasms.
  • John Perrotto of the Beaver County Times has a recap on where the Bucs' top prospects were ranked this season.
  • This day in history: In 1940, the Boston Bees sold OF Debs Garms to the Pirates. In 358 at bats for Pittsburgh. he led the NL in hitting with a .355 average. At the time, there was no 400 AB requirement; league prez Ford Frick said the title was unofficial and 100 games was enough to claim the crown (Garms got into 103). The veteran was sold to St. Louis after the 1941 season, where he would finish his career in 1945.
