Charlie v Jake Peavy; Lineup & Notes

Today's Game - Charlie Morton (7-4, 4.36 ) opens the Giant series against Jake Peavy (3-5, 4.18). Charlie is still trying to get it together; his last start was decent and him getting back in the groove would be a good thing for the rotation. He's 3-4 with a 2.84 ERA in 11 career starts against SF. Charlie hasn't faced the Giants this year, and had two no decisions last year with one excellent start and another that was meh.

Jake has pretty much been a six inning guy since returning from the DL (back sprain) in July, with spotty results. The vet hasn't faced the Bucs for a spell (this will be his first appearance at PNC since 2008), but overall has been pretty solid against Pittsburgh, with a 5-2/2.52 slash in eight outings. The game starts at 7:05 and will be on the MLB Network, Root Sports and 93.7 The Fan.

Big boy lineup again; Cervelli and rust never rest. Last time out, Charlie lost his grip in a heartbeat, so maybe Clint will have his pen on call from the sixth inning on. Big game with Mad Bum on deck.

  • With 45 games to go, Mark Melancon’s 38 saves are the fourth-highest single-season total in club history behind Mike Williams (46 in 2002), Jose Mesa (43 in 2004) and Joel Hanrahan (40 in 2011).
  • JHK has been hit by a pitch 16 times, which is a club record for a rookie batter.
  • St.Louis won and the Cubs lost last night. The Pirates are five games behind the Cards, four ahead of Chicago.
  • Pittsburgh swept three from the Giants at AT&T Park in June, missing Mad Bum on that trip.
  • The Giants activated Nori Aoki from the DL today and put Hunter Pence (strained left oblique) on it.
