Pirates & Reds Close Out Opening Homestand; Jamo v Mahle & Notes

Today: The final game of the set will start at 1:35. It will be aired by AT&T SportsNet and 93.7 The Fan. It's Kids Day and all 14-and-under fans will get a rally towel. The series is 2-1 in favor of the Bucs. The weather will be nippy, in the upper 30's, but (yay!) sunny.

Lineup: Josh Harrison 2B, Gregory Polanco RF, Starling Marte CF, J-Bell 1B, Cory Dickerson LF, Fran Cervelli C, Colin Moran 3B, Jordy SS & Jameson Taillon P. Looks like this is Clint's preferred lineup after a shake-n-bake batting order last year. Good to see gregory back after a day off due to a sore foot.

Pitchers: RHP Jameson Taillon (1-0/3.38) takes on RHP Tyler Mahle. Jamo K'ed nine Twins in his Home Opener outing, showing very good fastball command and ditto with his off-speed stuff. It should be fun to see what he can do now that he's had a healthy off season to prep and *knock on wood* no physical issues this year. JT has seen the Reds more often than any other opponent with seven starts and he's still looking for the key as he's 1-2/5.30 with a 1.570 WHIP and averaging just five frames per outing lifetime. Mahle is a Top-100 Prospect, 23-year-old rookie and is coming off a 1-0 win over the Cubbies. His forte is changing speeds, mixing pitches, and using the edges of the zone with his four-seamer, two-seamer, slider and change. Two of his four 2017 starts were against the Pirates, going 0-1/2.45. He gave up three runs in 11 IP, with nine hits, four walks and eight K.

Notes:
  • Odd stat: Pirates starting pitchers are rated 23rd in ground ball rate (39.7%) but are 6th best in preventing HR (0.63/nine innings). Those numbers hold true for the pen, too, with a 35.4% GBR but just 0.54 homers/nine innings.
  • Cutch was off to his usual slow April start in San Francisco, but snapped out of it in a big way yesterday. He went 6-for-7 with a double, two runs, four RBI and a three-run, walk-off homer, turning a deficit into a 14th inning victory after a 12-pitch battle. It was his first six-hit game; he collected five hits in a game once as a Pirate.
  • Happy anniversary! Today is the date in 1974 when Henry Aaron launched HR #715.
