Some moves, an award, a duel and TV numbers...
- Not a surprise, but 3B Ke'Bryan Hayes made Baseball America's All-Rookie team, although as DH.
- The Pirates signed Taiwanese RHP Po-Yu Chen, 19, to a $1.25M deal. He was considered a Top-25 international prospect and as Adam Berry of MLB.com writes, one of 48 foreign players Cherington has brought into the system.

- IF JT Riddle cleared waivers and was assigned to Indy; he instead opted for free agency.
- Ben Cherington chopped a couple of more staffers: former coach/current Special Assistant Nick Leyva, strength coach Jim Malone and head athletic trainer Bryan Housand were let go, along with several contract jobbers, per Jason Mackey of the Post Gazette.
- Well, rub it in - Gerrit Cole took on Tyler Glasnow in the winner-take-all ALDS Game #5 between the Evil Empire and Tampa Bay. The Rays won 2-1; Glasnow was the opener for a bullpen game and went 2-1/3 scoreless w/no hits, two walks and two whiffs. On short rest, Cole Train went 5-1/3; he gave up a run on Tampa's only hit off him, of course an Austin Meadows dinger. Cole fanned nine.
- The Pirates TV viewership went down 34% per game this year (MLB went up 4.2% nationally) according to Maury Brown of Forbes Magazine. The Bucco average viewership of 46,386 was ahead of only Oakland, Baltimore and Miami. Of course, the fans outperformed the team by not finishing last...
- Taylor Haase of DKPittsburghSports reported that there's another bump in the broadcasting road - "Verizon announced this week that its contract with AT&T SportsNet Pittsburgh expired on Sept. 30, and the two sides have yet to come to a new agreement. Verizon says that AT&T SportsNet Pittsburgh is demanding 'a significant increase' to their already high rate."
