News & Notes: Player & Suits Stuff, Roberto Special, Payroll, MLB News

 This week's shake 'n' bake:

  • Per Ken Rosenthal, Jake Stallings qualified for Super Two status, meaning that he's earned an extra arbitration year. He'll get four years of arb instead of the standard three, which should boost his take home check.
  • Pirates Top 10 Prospects per Baseball America (awfully heavy on RHP & SS's...):
  • The Pirates announced the hiring of David Burke as the Club’s Executive Vice President, Sales & Business Development. He had previously been in charge of sales for Kroenke Sports, which handled sales for the Colorado Avalanche, Denver Nuggets, Colorado Rapids and Colorado Mammoth.
  • Some things never change: Per DK and AP, the Pirates spent $24.1M in 2020, 29th of the 30 teams. If it’d been a 162-game season, that would’ve been $65.1M.
  • Ex-Bucco prospect OF Jason Martin, 25, signed a minor league deal with the Texas Rangers with an invite to the major league training camp.
  • The Mets have hired Dave Jauss as bench coach per Jon Heyman. He was a coach during the Clint Hurdle era but wasn't picked up by Shelty.
  • A program focusing on the last six months of Roberto Clemente’s life called “Clemente’s Departure” will air at 9 PM/Tuesday, December 22, on AT&T SportsNet's "Inside Pirates Baseball."
  • Covid vs Opening Day: Bob Nightengale of USA Today looks at a delayed and possibly shortened 2021 campaign.
  • MLB announced that the Negro Leagues will be granted major league status, and their stats and records will be included with MLB's.
