Camp has sprung...
- The Pirates bought CF Dustin Fowler, 26, from Oakland for an undisclosed amount after he was DFA'ed. An ex-Yankee prospect, in 2019, he batted .277 with AAA Las Vegas in the hitter-friendly PCL. He played one year of MLB ball for the A's in 2018, slashing .224 with six homers in 69 games. and will join the Pirates' center field tango with Anthony Alford and Brian Goodwin.
- IFs Erik González, Wilmer Difo and Miguel Peguero were delayed arriving to Bradenton due to hangups in entry to the US; all are in Bradenton now. A couple of other guys are in camp but were late starters because of Covid quarantine rules.
- LHP Austin Davis, 28, had offseason elbow soreness due to a sprain and was placed on the 60-day IL after Fowler was brought aboard. Rule 5 pick RHP Jose Soriano, 22, is also on the 60-day IL, still recovering from February 2020 TJ surgery, but flat-tossing in camp. CF Anthony Alford isn't 100% from last summer's elbow fracture; his hitting is unaffected but he still has trouble throwing, so he'll DH in camp for the time being. Adam Frazier has been out of action with a day-to-day groin tweak.
- OF Guillermo Heredia, 30, who the Pirates had for a spell last year, was DFA'ed by the Mets and claimed by the Braves.
- OF Travis Snider, 33, signed a $600K minor league deal with the Braves. His last MLB gig was in 2015 with the Bucs & Orioles; he spent time with the Marlin org last year.
- Another dude around forever is RHP Jesse Chavez, 37, who signed with the Angels as an NRI. You may recall him being traded by the Bucs to the Rays in 2009 for 2B Aki Iwamura, opening the door for Neil Walker's entry into the show.
