Notes: Very Bad Week; Snips, Moves, Injury Reports, Minor League News

Dog days...

Notes:

  • The Pirates opened the week at Arizona, and had a couple of embarrassing moments Tuesday - one happened when Rodolfo Castro slid into third, only to have his cell phone pop out of his back pocket (he forgot it was there), and later when two relievers (Wil Crowe, who was supposed to toss, and Yohan Ramirez, who pitched the seventh and apparently didn't know he was done for the night) took the hill at the same time before the eighth inning. The D-Backs took 3-of-4. Then the Pirates managed to play even worse ball on the coast and were broomed in a three-game set by the Giants, exhibiting glovework that would embarrass a little leaguer. The Pirates are off today, which may be more of a blessing for the fans than the team.
  • Per Stats by STATS: After Arizona's 9-3 win on Thursday, JT Brubaker became the first NL pitcher to go 25 consecutive road starts without a win since Harry McIntire of the Brooklyn Superbas in 1905-06.
  • 3B Ke'Bryan Hayes missed the entire Giants series with back spasms.

  • RHP Austin Brice was activated after RHP Yerry De Los Santos was placed on the 60-day IL with a lat strain.
  • In a swap of look-and-see guys, IF Rodolfo Castro was recalled from AAA and OF Cal Mitchell optioned to Indy.
  • Closer David Bednar is still in the exercise phase of his rehab. He isn't expected to start throwing again until early next week. LHP Dillon Peters (elbow inflammation) continues to recover and may start tossing again next week, too, if all goes well.
  • On his weekly radio show, Ben Cherington said that RHP Roansy Contreras' minor league work has been encouraging and it sounded as if he'll be return to the big club in the foreseeable future; we'll see. He didn't sound quite that enthusiastic concerning OF Jack Suwinski or IF Diego Castillo making a quick return.
  • C & jack-of-all-trades Endy Rodriguez, who was tearing it up with the High A Greensboro gang, was bumped up to AA-Altoona. Joining him were 2B Nick Gonzales and OF Lolo Sanchez, both who just finished rehab assignments and were removed from the IL.
  • A couple of updated Top 100 prospect lists: Baseball America - 46) IF Termarr Johnson, 69) RHP Quinn Priester, 82) IF Liover Peguero & 86) C Henry Davis. Fangraphs - 19) C Henry Davis, 24) IF Termarr Johnson, 83) IF Liover Peguero, 93) RHP Quinn Priester & 98) 2B Nick Gonzales.
