Notes: Still Working On That Camp Roster; Ex-Bucco Shuffle

Sill shufflin'...

Notes:

  • RHP Tyler Chatwood, 33, signed a minor league deal with the Bucs. In ten years, he's compiled a 52-60-5/4.45 slate for five teams and posted an ERA under 5.30 once since 2018. The FO also announced a couple of other NRI signings, LHP's Rob Zastryzny and Angel Perdomo. Zastryzny, 30, has made 24 outings for the Cubs, Mets and Angels over four years with a 2-0/4.66 slash while Perdomo tossed 22 times in 2020-21 for the Brewers with a 1-0/8.24 line.
  • Utilityman Diego Castillo was DFA'ed to make room for Austin Hedges on the 40-man roster. With a .206 BA, Diego was buried under a slew of young guys, his 11 homers not withstanding. The Bucs and D-Backs worked out a deal for Diego; Arizona gets Castillo and the Pirates get RHP Scott Randall. He's a starter who was drafted in the 7th round of the 2021 draft out of Cal State - Sacramento. He posted a line of 6-7/3.82 in Hi-A last year, averaging about a strikeout per inning.

  • Minor moves: Kieran Mattison, Altoona's manager, was promoted to the Pirates’ 2023 outfield, baserunning and run game coordinator. Callix Crabbe was named the new Curve skipper after leading Greensboro last year and Robby Hammock took his place after spending last season as bench coach for the El Paso Chihuahuas, the San Diego Padres AAA club. Miggy Perez returns as AAA Indy manager while Jonathan Johnston remains the pilot at Lo-A Bradenton.
  • RHP Nick Mears, 26, who was DFA'ed when OF/1B Connor Joe was added to the roster, was claimed by the Rangers. He missed most of the year following elbow surgery, so Texas get to knock the rust off him..
  • 1B Lewin Diaz, who the Pirates took from Miami just to DFA after signing Choi/Santana, was DFA'ed by the team that claimed him, Baltimore. That's three teams in a month's time...ooops, make it four, he's now on Atlanta's roster.
  • C Ali Sanchez, who was DFA'ed by Pittsburgh and claimed by Arizona, was just DFA'ed by the D-Backs. He's another guy who has been making the rounds of late; he's been through four organizations since the 2022 campaign.
  • The Yakult Swallows of the Japanese League signed ex-Pirate LHP Dillon Peters to a one-year/$750K agreement. Peters went 6-4/4.38 with Pittsburgh in 2021-22 in 28 outings (10 starts).

  • RHP Junior Hernandez, who the Bucs DFA'ed last month, was DFA'ed by the team that claimed him, the Yankees. He worked 3-1/3 IP here in three outings, and put up a zero on one hit, but gave up four walks, which is why teams are leery, even with his 98 MPH heater.
  • IF Wilmer Difo, who was a pretty handy jack-of-all-trades (he played six positions) and hit .269 with Pittsburgh in 2021, has signed a split major/minor league insurance policy deal with the New York Yankees after spending last season in the Arizona D-Back system.
  • RHP Jordan Lyles, who tossed here in 2019, inked a two-year/$17M contract with the Kansas City Royals.
  • OF/1B Jordan Luplow signed a one-year/$1.4M deal with the Braves. The Bucs traded him during the 2018 off season, and he's since played with the Indians, Rays and D-Backs.
