Weekly Report: Bucs Keep Looking As Okamota Picks Toronto, Minors Get Some Love, Buc OF Depth Guys Find New Homes

Into the New Year;

Pirates Stuff:

  • Pittsburgh was again in the mix but were eventually left in the dust when Japanese star 3B/1B/OF Kazuma Okamoto agreed to an affordable four year/$60 M deal with the Blue Jays, plus a 10.875 M posting fee to his NPA team, the Yomiuri Giants. The Bucs were among a handful of serious suitors, although San Diego, the Angels and Toronto were considered the  frontrunners. So the Pirates everyday hot corner guy will be Jared Triolo. Or Eugenio Suarez. Or Yoan Moncada. Or...?

  • Dominic Campbell of SI/Pirates writes that the Pirates farm system is regaining its shine and is one of the most improved systems in MLB.

MLB Stuff:

  • The Red Sox have reportedly signed FA OF Matt Fraizer, 28, to a minor league deal. Matt was a third round pick out of Arizona in 2019 and had been with the Bucs since, reaching Indy in 2024 and through last year. He never got a call to Pittsburgh though he hit .305 in '25, so we'll see if a change of scenery helps.
  • OF Will Robertson, was claimed by the Pirates from the White Sox in October and then released in December, was claimed by Baltimore, but not for long: he was DFA'ed this week. He's been with four organizations in 2025.
