2010 Draft & Internationals

The Draft:

The FO stuck to the tried and true, going after over-slot, high school pitching, adding college position players later in the day. They got their top guns, but only signed six of their top ten selections, and just two of those before mid-August.

The Bucs paid $8.75M to ink their top two draft picks, high school pitchers Jameson Taillon ($6.5M) and Stetson Allie ($2.25 M), signing them on August 17th. Neither played; they instead reported to the Florida Instructional League after the season.

Other signees:

-- OF Mel Rojas, 20 (#3 - Wabash Valley JC) Rojas was considered raw but toolsy, and signed at slot, $423,900. In 164 at-bats for the SC Spikes, he hit .207 with virtually no power. Rojas will move to West Virginia in 2011.
-- RHP Nick Kingham, 18 (#4 - Sierra Vista HS): Signed for $480,000 and has a rep as a hard thrower. He's likely to end up in State College next year after pitching 3 innings of GCL ball in 2010.
-- RHP Tyler Waldron, 21 (#5 - Oregon State): Waldron signed at slot, for $173,500. He was 4-7 with a 3.90 ERA at State College with OK peripherals except being weak on the K rate. Waldron will move up a level next season.

Three high school pitchers, Jason Hursh, Austin Kubitza and Dace Kime, were drafted 6-7-8; none signed. Neither did #10 choice Zach Weiss, another prep pitcher.

-- RHP Brandon Cumpton, 21 (#9 - Georgia Tech): Cumpton signed for $124,500 and got three starts at State College; the college fireballer will advance to West Virginia next season.
-- OF Daniel Grovatt, 21 (#11 - Virginia): He went to State College, but as a mid August signee, only got in 11 at-bats. He's also due to move up next year.
-- RHP Vincent Payne, 19 (#12 - Cypress College): Payne went 2-2, 2.36 between the GCL and State College; he should start at SC in 2011.
-- RHP Bruce Weidman, 19 (#14 - SW Oregon CC): Worked 8 innings in the GCL and was shut down in mid-July. He'll probably move on to SC.
-- SS Drew Maggi, 21 (#15 - Arizona State): Inked to a $468,000 bonus, Maggi hit .156 in 18 games for State College, but should move to WVA next year.
-- 1B Matt Curry, 22 (#16 - TCU): The big lefty hit .299/7/29 for State College and will advance at least a level in 2011.
-- RHP Ryan Hafner, 18 (#17 - Lee Summit HS): Signed for $450,000 and pitched a couple of innings in the GCL. He's considered a project, and may start at the same level in 2011.
-- 1B Jared Lakind, 18 (#23 - Cypress Woods HS): Signed for $400,000, and reported to the GCL, where he homered once in four games; his rep is as a big bopper.

Other Draft Picks:

#20 - OF Justin Bencsko, 23 (State College: .188/0/3)
#22 - 2B Adalberto Santos, 23 (State College: .319/3/35)
#24 - 1B Justin Howard, 23 (GCL - .341/0/3)
#25 - RHP Casey Sadler, 20 (State College: 3-0, 3.00)
#27 - RHP Kevin Kleis, 19 (GCL: 0-1, 2.78)
#30 - C Matt Skirving, 20 (State College: .217/0/10)
#31 - RHP Jason Townsend, 22 (State College: 1-1, 3.60)
#32 - 3B Chase Lyles, 23 (State College: .241/6/33)
#33 - LHP Justin Ennis, 22 (State College/WVA: 3-3, 5.67)
#34 - SS Kelson Brown, 22 (State College: .293/0/26)
#36 - RHP James Archibald, 20 (GCL: 0-3, 5.40)
#39 - RHP Kevin Decker, 22 (State College: 8-1, 3.75)
#41 - RHP Bryton Trepagnier, 19 (GCL: 1-2, 4.74)
#49 - RHP Logan Pevny, 18 (GCL: 0-0, 5.79)
FA - IF Kevin Mort, 22 (GCL/State College: .281/0/21)

This draft is boom or bust. They got the two best power arms on the board with Taillon and Allie, although the jury is out on Allie's potential as a starter vs closer. Kingham and Hafner also have great upside; they're similar guys to 2009's Zach Von Rosenberg and Colton Cain.

Nobody's jumped out among the position players. Rojas is a physical specimen with uneven credentials who is far and away the most highly touted non-pitcher in the draft. Matt Curry had a good year; Adalberto Santos and Kelson Brown formed a pretty good middle for State College.

It's way too early to get a handle on this group, but it doesn't seem as deep as past classes, though it does have more potential star power.

Latin Players Signed:

The Buccos inked RHP Luis Heredia, 16, for a $2.6M, a Pittsburgh international record bonus. He's already a big kid, at 6'6" 185 pounds, and can throw 92-93 MPH.

They also added Venezuelan OF Willy Garcia for a $280,000 bonus, higher than any international bonus the team gave in 2009. Garcia, 17, is 6' 1", 200 pounds - they sure feed 'em good down south.

Others signed are are RHP Brayan Almonte, 18, (Dominican Republic): LHP Angel Sanchez, 17, (Dominican Republic); RHP Jose Luis Acosta, 18, (Venezuela): and 1B Jose Roman, 19, (Venezuela); SS Dilson Herrera, 16, (Colombia); RHP Yhonatan Herrand, 18, (Dominican Republic - $185,000 bonus); and RHP Oderman Rocha, 17, (Colombia).

The Pirates also inked OF Yunior Aquiles, 16; LHP Cristian Henriquez, 18, (Dominican Republic); RHP Yunior Montero, 16, (Dominican Republic); LHP Melvin Rosario, 18, (Dominican Republic); OF Miguel De Aza, 17, (Dominican Republic - $150,000); 2B Rodney Polonia, 17, (Dominican Republic: son of former big leaguer Luis Polonia); RHP Isaac Sanchez, 17 (Dominican Republic - $180,000 bonus); and C Heriberto Figueroa, 21 (Dominican Republic).

Actually, it was a good year for the Pirates below the border. Heredia is a stud, and Garcia, Herrand, Sanchez, and DeAza are all highly thought of prospects. It's a crap shoot, considering the age teams sign these kids, but at least the Buccos are rollin' dem bones again.

Draft News

Fresh off the net:

-- Chuck Finder of the Post Gazette says Jameson Taillon has signed a contract with the Pirates according to his dad. That's been confirmed by other reporters, too.

Randy Byers of Houston 5A Baseball, through Pirate Prospects, reports that "Pirates deal (offered) to Taillon rumored to be 6.5 million," but that's unconfirmed.

And maybe wrong. Jon Heyman of Sports Illustrated tweeted that "Jameson Taillon, the no. 2 overall pick, is in agreement with the Pirates for a bit more than $5 mil." That number sounds more like the figure that had been bandied about.

Ooops - maybe it is right: both Jim Callis of Baseball America and Chuck Finder of the Post Gazette say that it is a $6.5M bonus, beating even Pedro's ante.

-- Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer tweets that "...Pirates, according to sources, have signed St. Ed's pitcher Stetson Allie. He was their second round pick in June."

Jen Langosch of MLB.com adds "The deal is not 100 percent done -- some details must still be nailed down -- but the parameters are in place to add the right-handed pitcher to the organization by the end of the night."

The deal is done; Paul Hoynes reports that "No.2 pick Stetson Allie, from St. Edward High School, signed for $2.25 million. He's headed to rookie ball in Bradenton, Fla."

The signing and bonus have been confirmed by other sources. But it doesn't look like he's headed to the GCL; the Pirates said he and Taillon will report to the Instructional League in the fall; they may be rostered with an A team for the time being, but aren't expected to pitch, according to Chuck Finder.

-- According to Jeff Metcalfe of the Arizona Republic, "Arizona State shortstop Drew Maggi signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates on Monday at the deadline for drafted players to choose between pro and college baseball.

A draft-eligible sophomore because of his age, Maggi was a 15th-round pick by the Pirates, who sources said offered him a first-round bonus of more than $600,000."

Tim Williams of Pirate Prospects tweeted that he got a $468K bonus, and that's been confirmed by other sources.

-- The Pirates announced that they came to terms with 23rd round pick Jared Lakind, a high school first baseman from Texas, for a bonus of $400K.

Good day for the Pirates; they missed a couple, but netted the big fish. All the players were signed to standard minor league contracts; there was speculation that both Taillon and Allie were looking for spots on the 40-man roster, ala Pedro.

And if the figures are right, the Bucs spent over $12M in this year's draft. Bob Nutting may be getting away on the cheap with his big league club, but he sure hasn't stinted in signing prospects.

The Signees, Please...

Hey, we haven't been ignoring the Bucco's draft; if out scribbles are right, they've signed 17 players. But only one is from the top ten picks, and he's a reliever, so there's not been a great burst of activity on that front yet.

There are a couple of college guys that have some potential, and we'll see how quickly they advance through the system, but they've only inked a couple of high school kids so far, both pitchers and both projects. Here's the list of signees as we have it:

-- 5th rounder RHP Tyler Waldron ($173,500 bonus), 21, was Oregon State's closer. He's assigned to State College.

-- 12th rounder RHP Vincent Payne, 19, from Cyprus College, reliever with terrible stats; Pirates must see something coachable in him. He's been assigned to the GCL.

-- 14th-rounder RHP Bryce Weidman, 19, pitched for Southwestern Oregon CC and showed good K/W ratio, 90 MPH heater, workable curve. He's pitching in the GCL.

-- 16th-rounder 1B Matt Curry, 21, TCU with a good stick and some power. He's been sent to State College.

-- 20th rounder OF Justin Bencsko, 22, from Villanova, good senior year, has some speed. He's been assigned to State College.

-- 22nd rounder 2B Adalberto Santos, 22, out of Oregon State, good average, little pop, lotta speed. He's at State College.

-- 24th rounder 1B Justin Howard, 22, hit .456 for New Mexico but not much power for 1B. He injured his knee during the playoffs, and hasn't been cleared to play yet. Howard probably would have gone higher in the draft if not for the injury, so he's a good pick at this slot.

-- 25th rounder RHP Casey Sadler, 19, from Western Oklahoma State has four-pitch mix, fast ball from high eighties to lower nineties. He's pitching at State College.

-- 30th rounder C Matt Skirving, 20, had great 2009, so-so 2010 with the stick for Eastern Michigan. He's working at State College.

-- 31st rounder RHP Jason Townsend, 21, worked out of Alabama's bullpen; throws 94 MPH with control issues. He's now at State College.

-- 32nd rounder IF Chase Lyles, 23, hit .350+ last two season for Northwestern State, lotsa speed, not much power. He's at State College.

-- 33rd rounder LHP Justin Ennis, 22, out of LSU - Sheveport, was ace of their staff, good control, with a strikeout per inning. He's at State College.

-- 34th rounder SS Kelson Brown, 22, hit .443 at Linfield College, speedy prototype leadoff/two hole guy. He's playing at State College.

-- 36th rounder RHP James Archibald, 20, worked out of the pen for McLennan CC, has 87 MPH heater so must have some off speed stuff. He's playing in the GCL.

-- 39th rounder RHP Kevin Decker, 22, was 8-0 at College of Charleston, has 94 MPH heat but not a huge strikeout pitcher. He's now at State College.

-- 41st-rounder RHP Bryton Trepagnier, 18, pitched at East St. John HS (Louisiana), big kid at 6'5", throws 91 MPH. He was just signed, and will likely end up on the GCL roster.

-- 49th-round pick RHP Logan Pevny, 18, threw for West Milford HS (NJ), fastball upper eighties. He was recently inked and will probably go to the GCL.

-- Undrafted SS Kevin Mort, 22, who started at Ol' Miss, was signed. Good glove, .285 hitter over past two seasons. He was sent to the GCL, not a great sign for someone his age, but it did fill a glaring organizational need.

Last Day Draft Bios

OK, OK, GW finally put down his remote and went to work. Here's the mini-scoop on draft picks 31-50; there are some big boys, two-way talents, and intriguing players in the bunch.

Round 31 - RHP Jason Townsend (University of Alabama Tuscaloosa) is 2-1 with a 6.25 ERA. He works out of Bama's bullpen, where he's notched 36 Ks in 36 innings and has a rep as a hard thrower.
Round 32 - IF Chase Lyles (Northwestern State) is a senior third baseman/shortstop. He hit .350 with seven home runs, 56 RBI, and 34 stolen bases.
Round 33 - LHP Justin Ennis (Louisiana State Shreveport) is a junior, and was a big fish in a small pond this season. Ennis was 12-0 with a 2.85 ERA and 92 Ks in 94-2/3 frames for the NAIA school
Round 34 - SS Kelson Brown (Linfield College) hit .433 with 72 RBI and 27 doubles for the NCAA-D3 school. The senior was named the Conference Player of the Year.
Round 35 - CF Andrew Muren (Cal State Northridge) hit .290 with three home runs, 21 RBI and 47 runs scored as a sophomore. He's a 6'-6" converted pitcher after tearing his labrum in 2009, so could have some upside as an OF.
Round 36 - RHP James Archibald (McLennan Community College) went 3-1 with a 3.00 ERA in 27 innings. He's also a strong stick and a two-way player; the Bucs like his arm.
Round 37 - C William Allen (Buchholz High, Florida, committed to Mississippi) hit .470 with 11 homers and 33 RBI, and is considered a strong defensive backstop.
Round 38 - RHP Alex Cox (Santiago High School, California, uncommitted) is a big guy, 6'-6", and went 5-3 with a 2.67 ERA for Santiago. He throws 88-90 mph and is a late bloomer; he was on the JV last season.
Round 39 - RHP Kevin Decker (College of Charleston) worked 81 innings and went 8-0 with a 3.78 ERA and 67 strikeouts in 17 games; eleven were starts. He became the first draftee to agree to terms; he'll report to Bradenton next week and probably start out at State College with an eye toward West Virginia.
Round 40 - RHP Harrison Cooney (Vero Beach High, Florida, uncommitted) was 7-1 with a 1.52 ERA in 50-2/3 innings, striking out 55. He pitched a no-hitter. Cooney only worked a partial season; he had to sit out part of the year as a transfer student.
Round 41 - RHP Bryton Trepagnier (East St. John High School, Louisiana, committed to Bossier Parish CC) is another big (6'-5") and raw two-way guy.
Round 42 - LHP Stephen Lumpkins (American University) didn't play college baseball, but hoops, as AU didn't have a nine. The 6'-8" player (notice a trend here?) played Legion ball and in the Cal Ripken League over the summer.
Round 43 - RHP Garrett Hicks (Yucaipa High, California, uncommitted) is 6'-8" and had problems with growth plate issues; he throws in the upper 80s and has a slider and split. He was 2-0 with a 1.05 ERA and an OBA of .093, and can miss some bats though he has control problems.
Round 44 - RHP Cory McGinnis (Shelton State CC, Alabama) pitched for Hampton in his prep days. He went 11-2 with a 3.93 ERA as a college freshman in 2010.
Round 45 - RHP Connor Sadzeck (Crystal Lake Central High, Illinois, committed to Oklahoma) is 6'-6" and went 6-4 with a 3.56 ERA and struck out 89 batters and walked 26 in 52-1/3 frames. He threw a no-hitter year in May.
Round 46 - C Ryan Wiggins (West Seattle High, leaning toward Lewis & Clark State) batted .452 with six home runs, 33 RBI and 31 runs scored in 21 games this season.
Round 47 - CF Nathan Sorenson (Texas High, committed to Oklahoma State) Athletic, but signed with OSU as a QB, not an OF, so not much chance of inking him.
Round 48 - LHP Dillon Haviland (South Fayette High, committed to Duke) He went 10-0 with a 0.51 ERA and 96 strikeouts and was selected as the WPIAL AA Pitcher of the Year. Throws an 89 MPH heater.
Round 49 - RHP Logan Pevny (West Milford High, New Jersey, uncommitted) is another two-way player. He went 3-2 with a 4.59 ERA and recorded 49 strikeouts in 32 innings while hitting .340 with eight homers and 34 RBI. Pevny throws in the upper eighties.
Round 50 - RHP Dusty Isaacs (Lebanon High, Ohio, committed to Georgia Tech) went 4-3 with a 2.09 ERA and struck out 69 batters in 56 innings. He's considered a top talent and will cost a bundle to sign; the last is not always least.

The Draft Goes On...Did We Miss Any RHPs?

RHP Stetson Allie of St. Edward HS in Ohio was the Pirates second selection. Allie throws in the upper nineties and is projected to be a reliever by many scouts. He's also a good hitter and plays corner infield, kinda like JVB.

The Pirates list him as a pitcher, and we think they'll work on keeping him as a starter.

Anyway, he's another power arm to add to the arsenal; where he'll fit will be seen. Allie does have a rocket; he threw six pitches at 100 MPH or more in his final game. The 19-year-old Allie went 9-1 with a 1.29 ERA and 134 strikeouts in 60 innings for St. Edward his senior season.

He was expected to go in the first round, ans was ranked as the eighth guy on the board by Baseball America, so he fell into the Pirates lap.

Allie has committed to North Carolina, and he's represented by the Hendrick brothers, just like #1 pick Jameson Taillon. Allie and Taillon are supposed to have the best two heaters available in this years draft.

The Pirates will have to ante up to sign him, too. One reason he fell was because of the uncertainty of whether he's better suited for the mound or as a power-hitting position player. College could sort that out, and the scholarship to UNC gives him leverage with the wheeler-dealers.

Don't expect any talks to start soon; neither Allie's dad nor the Bucs seem to think a contract discussion is around the corner.

We'll get some stuff together on the other picks later (visit Bucco Fans and click on the names under 2010 draft for the bios) - but suffice to say the Pirates took 15 RHP, 2 LHP, and 12 position players today.

Neal Huntington, talking to FSN, said that the run on pitchers was just they way the board fell. He added that you never have enough arms in the system due to attrition, injury, and plain performance issues. And, of course, it's always a crap shoot to determine how many will sign on the dotted line.

That's all cool, but it might help to find a couple of guys that can provide some run support for all the arms the Bucs are amassing. So we'll withhold judgment until we see who signs. You never have too many pitchers, it's true, but the Pirates need some difference makers at the plate, too.
