- Troy Renck of the Denver Post opines that if the price is right "One guy that would fit as the Rockies super utility guy is Clint Barmes. But with Bloomquist getting nearly $6M from Seattle, don't see it..."
- A couple more pitchers went off the boards - Doug Pfister of Detroit was sent to the Nats for a prospect and a pair of spares, so now the Tigers have their rotation set. The Oakland A's signed Scott Kazmir for two years and a reported $22M.
- John Parker of MLB.com picked the Pirates' organizational All-Stars for 2013. You might be surprised at some of the names...
- The Yankees signed 1B/OF Russ Canzler to a minor league deal. Canzler was a 2013 Indy pick-up who had MLB time with Tampa Bay and Cleveland.
- Spoiler alert - this is not a even a speculative rumor, but just a bit of time killing by ESPN Sweet Spot's Dave Schonfield, who dreamed up some three-team deals in a post called "Let's Have Some Fun." One of his deals: the Rockies shipping Troy Tulowitzki to the Pirates and Dexter Fowler to the Marlins and receiving top Pirate prospects Gregory Polanco and Alen Hanson, along with Marlin closer Steve Cishek and prospects Jake Marisnick and Justin Nicolino. The Marlins would also receive Pirates shortstop Jordy Mercer in the deal. Don't think that one, given Tulo's contract, will get much traction.
- Sad news: 24 year old Pirate minor league OF Evan Chambers passed away this weekend in his sleep. He was a 2009 draft pick that made it to Altoona before a foot injury derailed his 2013 season. Our thoughts are with his family and friends.
"Somehow we have developed this large contingent of know-it-all baseball fans who bay like wounded coyotes at any mention of wins, losses, RBI or batting average. I never know whether I should blame myself for this or not.." (Bill James)
