Notes: Player News, Cost of Business, Oliva AS, Freeser Retires

More during the treading-water season:

  • Would the Bucs trade Starling? MLBTR's Jeff Todd sees a pretty big market for him if he was dangled, who notes that his age, contract and the current state of the Pirates may make it a good time to move him.

  • OF Bryan Reynolds made Baseball America's All-Rookie team; SS Kevin Newman was bumped out by Fernando Tatis, and was one of a handful of "worthy but..." guys mentioned in the article.
  • RHP Geoff Hartlieb had foot surgery at AGH; the type of injury and whether it impacted his performance during the season weren't disclosed. He's expected back for 2020 camp.
  • Matt Schwarz's MLB Trade Rumor's estimated arb salaries for eligible Buccos: Josh Bell: $5.9M; Keone Kela: $3.4M; Joe Musgrove: $3.4M; Adam Frazier: $3.2M; Trevor Williams: $3M; Jameson Taillon: $2.3M; Elias Diaz: $1.4M; Chad Kuhl: $1.4M; Mike Feliz: $1.2M; and Erik Gonzalez: $800K.
  • ESPN's Dave Schoenfield notes that "Since the wild card was instituted in 1995, the Nationals are now the 29th team to reach the LCS round. The only team not to get there ... the Pirates."
  • Oh, the humanity...in the winner-take-all Game Five of the ALDS, the matchup was Gerrit Cole v Tyler Glasnow. Cole Train won easily, 6-1.
  • Jared Oliva, 23, was selected for the Arizona Fall League All-Star game. The center fielder was hitting .425 for Peoria at the time of the selection after batting .277 at Altoona during the season, making up for a frigid first half with a smokin' hot close. He's not a power guy, but has good wheels, with 69 stolen bases in his two years in the minors and seven more for Peoria. The game will be carried by the MLB Network tonight at 8PM.

  • David Freese announced his retirement. Freeser played 11 years for four teams, batted .277 w/113 OPS+ and won a WS in 2011.
