Spring reporting week, and so far everyone is a happy camper:
- To fill the void in CF after the trade of Starling Marte, the Pirates signed 10-year vet Jarrod Dyson to a one-year/$2M contract, pending his physical. The 35-year-old played for Kansas City, Seattle, and Arizona, featuring good defense and fleet feet but an indifferent bat: in 2019, his line was .230/.313/.320 (66 OPS+) but with 30 swiped bases and 13 Defensive Runs Saved on the plus side of the ledger. To clear 40-man space for him, Jameson Taillon was flipped to the 60-day IL.
- Another hole filled: Sheltie said Keone Kela will be the Bucco closer. Despite the "closer competition" anticipated in camp, KK was the obvious choice for the job, which is his to lose. More interesting will be how Shelton uses the pen and whether he goes by rote ala Clint or by leverage.
- MLB.com took a shot at the lineup/rotation if the season was to start tomorrow. For the Bucs, they had:
- Tough to tell until they've been tested some, but the initial news on the long list of injured guys is good: starter RHP JT Brubaker (forearm), RHP Nick Burdi (neurogenic thoracic outlet syndrome), RHP Kyle Crick (finger), UT Erik González (left foot), RHP Geoff Hartlieb (right foot), C Christian Kelley (left hand), RHP Chad Kuhl (TJ surgery), OF Jason Martin (left shoulder) and RHP Edgar Santana (TJ surgery) are all cleared to play w/o restriction. OF Gregory Polanco is also said to be ready and rarin' to go, though the once-bitten Bucs plan to bring him along slowly, while Jamo (TJ surgery) is out of action.
- MLB.com picks every team's biggest Spring Training storyline. For the Pirates, it's the emergence of Mitch Keller.
- Eric Longenhagen of Fangraphs lists six Pirates puppies among MLB's top 100 minor league prospects: 3B Ke'Bryan Hayes, SS Oneil Cruz, RHP Mitch Keller (who is shortly to lose his rookie tag), CF Travis Swaggerty, RHP Tahnaj Thomas and new SS Liover Peguero.
- OF/P JB Shuck has taken his two-way talents to Washington, where he just signed a minor league deal w/NRI.
- RHP Parker Markel was outrighted off the Angels 40-man roster after he cleared waivers.
And yep, there are new MLB rules in effect this season:
