News and Notes: Pretty Quiet Week

Sparse stuff this week:

  • RHP Nick Burdi declared for FA after being assigned to Indy; the Bucco beat gang reports that the Pirates are still interested in keeping him around, so we'll see how that situation ends up. He'll be out of action in 2021 after TJ surgery last month.
  • John Baker, the Cubs mental skills coach and baseball ops assistant, was hired as the Bucs farm director (actually, he's officially the Director of Coaching and Player Development now), first called by the Post-Gazette's Jason Mackey last week. He replaces Larry Broadway, who had been the minor league boss man but was recently reassigned within the organization.

  • Keep an eye on free agent CF Kevin Millar; his name has popped up in several convos re: guys the Buccos may go in on. He's an excellent glove man, played four years in Toronto when GM Ben Cherington was there, and was thought to be a target last season before Jarrod Dyson was signed.
  • Pirates president Travis Williams, in an interview with the Bradenton Herald, dropped a couple of tidbits, main among them that MLB does plan to have a regular spring training and that Bradenton/Greensboro have made the cut as surviving minor league towns.
  • The big MLB winners: NL MVP: Freddie Freeman; AL MVP: Jose Abreu; NL Cy Young: Trevor Bauer; AL Cy Young: Shane Bieber.
  • They really stretched this out: the Roberto Clemente Award winner won't be announced until December 7th. Shame that MLB is treating the award like an afterthought.
