Notes: Get A Scorecard; IL List Grows, Call Ups Lining Up

Walking wounded & reinforcements...

Notes:

  • The Pirates started the week by taking 2-of-3 from Colorado at PNC Park, largely fueled by the young Bucs. They then battled San Diego, dropping 2-of-3, with one loss by a run and the other in extra innings..
  • The Pirates continue to mystify with their roster construction - it took them several weeks to finally put a full complement of OFs in the dugout, then they ran out of catchers due to just one injury, and a lack of 1B'men cost them the opening game against the Padres.  (It's reported that they're acquiring DFA'ed 1B Yu Chang from Cleveland; he's 0-for-10 with 7 K so far this year and hit .228 w/9 HR last year in 237 AB. SS/2B rotates among a posse of utility infielders. Meanwhile, Oneil Cruz and Mason Martin wait as the service time clock ticks down...
  • The Pirates have had 44 players make MLB outings, split 22-22 between position players/pitchers.

  • Michael Chavis has been playing through a sore elbow that effects his swing, brought about when he was nicked b a pitch against the Rox on Wednesday. Ke'Bryan Hayes has also missed a couple of games with a stiff back, which was aggravated by the long flight to San Diego. Both played in the series. Ben Gamel pulled up lame Saturday night and went on the 10-day IL with a strained hammy. Utilityman Hoy Park was called up from Indy to fill his spot.
  • Six Pirates have made their MLB debut so far this season - P's Yerry De Los Santos, Cam Alldred & Beau Sulser, OFs Cal Mitchell & Jack Suwinski and IF Diego Castillo.
  • On Monday, the Pirates made one of yesterday's reported moves official when RHP Yerry De Los Santos was added to the roster. He replaced RHP Bryse Wilson, who was optioned to Indy, clearing an active roster spot. Wilson will start in AAA after being used as a swingman in Pittsburgh per skipper Shelton. SS Kevin Newman's hammy injury apparently ended up a little more than minor; he was transferred from the 10-day IL to the 60-day IL, and that opened up a 40-man roster spot for Yerry.
  • The following day, they called up RHP Roansy Contreras and OF Cal Mitchell, who both started against the Rox. (Roansy went five scoreless IP, Cal collected his first MLB hit and RBI) RHP Heath Hembree (calf) and and DH Daniel Vogelbach (hammy) were placed on the IL. To make room on the 40-man roster for Mitchell, LHP Cam Alldred was DFA'ed. He cleared waivers and the Pirates assigned him back to Indy.

  • To pen the road trip, the Pirates called up utility guy Tucupito Marcano from AA Altoona. 1B/DH Yoshi Tsutsugo went on the 10-day IL (lumbar muscle strain), retro to 5/25.
  • C Roberto Perez had an impromptu press conference after his hammy surgery and told the beat guys that he wants to return to the Pirates. "Hopefully I’ll be back next year. I feel like I owe them,” he said. “And I love it here.” He's a free agent after this season, which ended after the surgery.
  • RHP Nick Mears began a rehab assignment at Bradenton; he had elbow surgery in February and is working his way back from the 60-day IL.
  • RHP Parker Markel, who appeared in 15 games for the 2019 Bucs (0-1/5.71) in his last MLB gig, was called up by The Oakland A's from AAA.
  • OF Anthony Alford, late of the Bucs, has reportedly signed a deal to play in Korea.
  • He hasn't played MLB since 2019 with the Dodgers, and on Saturday, C Russ Martin made the obvious official by retiring.
  • By agreement between MLB and the MLBPA, the cap of 13 pitchers on active rosters, first set to kick in on 5/2 and then 5/30, now won't go into effect until 6/20; the 14-pitcher max will remain in place for games through 6/19.
