Notes: Camp Snips, Prospects Pirates News, Ex-Bucs...

Let the games begin...

Notes:

  • Shelty said that B-Rey will play both left and center this year. Our guess is that he's looking to set up a platoon situation for Jack Suwinski, who mans center when Reynolds is in left.
  • LHP Jalin Garcia was taken out of Saturday's game with "arm tightness," so that will bear watching as the Pirates are thin on lefty relievers. He'll get an MRI on Monday.
  • MLB.com picked RH reliever Colin Selby as the Bucs darkhorse to break camp this year.
  • MLB Pipeline has Jonathan Mayo's preseason Top 30 Pirates Prospects, from Termarr Johnson to Tsung-Che Cheng.
  • Bubba Chandler, 20, who the Bucs used as a DH/P in Class A Bradenton last year, is going to concentrate on the hill only this season. He was 1-1/4.15 off the slab (26 IP) and hit .184 (88 PA) for the Marauders in '22.

  • The Buc signed 27-year-old SS/2B Domingo Leyba, who has spent some time with the D-backs and Orioles, to a minor league deal. Once highly touted, he's been a AAAA player with the bat (.152/126 PA MLB; .296/AAA) and is an organizational depth signing.
  • Ernie Withers, the gent who went into cardiac arrest on the field last week and was treated by the Buc medicos, tossed put the first pitch for Tuesday's game, with doc Pat DeMeo as his catcher.
  • Hey, Pirates PR isn't totally tone deaf. AJ Burnett will throw out the ceremonial first pitch to  Russell Martin for the home opener against the Chicago White Sox on April 7th. The Pirates are celebrating the 10th anniversary of the 94-win team that ended two decades of consecutive losing seasons in 2013.
  • Phoenix Media & Entertainment signed an agreement with the family of Roberto Clemente to produce a biopic about the life of Clemente.
  • Former Bucco closer Rich Rodriguez signed an NRI deal with the Miami Marlins.

  • Tyler Glasnow injured his oblique muscle during a bullpen session on Monday. He's had a rough spell; the ex-Buc returned from TJ surgery last year in time to make just three starts for Tampa. He's expected to miss six-to-eight weeks.
  • Big Joe Musgrove broke his toe in a weight room accident; his status is uncertain as he's expected to miss a minimum of two weeks.
  • MLB is seriously evaluating PitchCom during the spring after last year's trial run. It's a device that which allows the battery to communicate quickly and hopefully seamlessly without the signs and conferences.
