Notes: Contracts, Cuts, Injuries, News

Startin' to tighten up...

Notes:

  • The Pirates agreed to 2023 contract terms with 27 players on their 40-man roster who are pre-arb  eligible, with one exception: SS Oneil Cruz had his contract renewed for $720 K, the league minimum. Among the Buccos included in this group are pitchers Dave Bednar, Roansy Contreras, Wil Crowe & Chase De Jong, OF Jack Suwinski, C Endy Rodriguez and IF Rudolfo Castro.
  • Sunday moves: the Bocs optioned OF Cal Mitchell to Triple-A Indy and reassigned IF Nick Gonzales to minor league camp. Sent to Indy earlier in the week: RHPs Mike Burrows & Colin Selby, INF Jared Triolo, C Endy Rodriguez and OF Ryan Vilade. Sent to Minor League Camp: RHPs Wei-Chieh Huang & Nate Webb, LHP Caleb Smith.
  • Well deserved after his performance so far this spring: Mitch Keller will pitch Opening Day against the Reds at GABP on March 30th.

  • RHP Duane Underwood Jr. tossed a 1-2-3 eighth inning to finish a perfect game against Israel in the WBC, the first perfecto and second no-no in the tournament's history. The game was shortened by an inning due to the mercy rule; Puerto Rico won, 10-0.
  • LHP Jarlin Garcia has nerve damage to his arm; he'll be shut down for at last another month.
  • Cutch has elbow tenderness and has been out of the lineup this week, but he's still taking BP and expected back in action early next week.
  • 1B Carlos Santana slipped on the grass during Thursday's game, tweaking his left knee, and left the field with a limp and a little assistance. It proved minor and he's back in action.
  • Greensboro power-hitting 3B Dariel Lopez, the #19 Pirates prospect per MLB Pipeline, dislocated his right knee during offseason workouts, had surgery, and is out for the season.
  • Free shirt Friday is back, yay!
  • LHP Jose Quintana, who reestablished his brand with the Bucs last year before being dealt at the deadline to the Cards and then jumping to the Mets, had a benign lesion removed from his rib. It's projected that Q will be out until at least July.
