Sunday: Twins v Bucs, Williams v Ryan Vogelsong, Lineup, Notes

Today: The Twinkies come to Bradenton and LECOM Park to take on the Buccos. The game starts at 1:05 and will be on Root Sports and 93.7 The Fan.

Lineup (subs): Danny Ortiz CF, David Freese 3B, John Jaso 1B, Jordy Mercer SS (Kevin Newman), Jose Osuna RF, Chris Stewart C (Jacob Stallings), Barrett Barnes LF, Chris Bostick 2B & Trevor Williams P. It may be the first time that we've seen Freeser-JJ-Jordy batting 2-3-4.

Pitchers: Trevor Williams, Steven Brault, Felipe Rivero, Tyler Webb & Casey Sadler. Trevor's trying to keep his head above water in the scrum for the fifth spot. It's good to see Sadler's name penciled on a scorecard after missing much of 2015 and all of 2016 following TJ surgery.

Yesterday's Game: The Bucs Grapefruit League win streak was snapped at four when a two-run walk-off dinger served up by Miguel Rosario gave the O's a 7-6 win. Clay Holmes got into early trouble when the first four batters reached (three softly) and a pair of runs scored, but settled down nicely afterward to limit the damage. Jared Hughes was rocked for three tallies; spring hasn't been very kind to him. Nick Kingham was strike-challenged but put up a pair of goose eggs; Josh Lindblom and Antonio Bastardo also added scoreless outings. Gift Ngoepe went 3-for-3, scoring three times, and Phil Gosselin had two knocks while Fraze drove in three Buccos.

Notes:
  • Pirates prez Frank Connelly more or less admitted they have no timeline for Jung Ho Kang's visa process, saying JHK's placement on the reserved list “is neither a statement of pessimism or optimism (but that) it's really a procedural matter...at this point” with Opening Day fast approaching; it's just 23 days away.

  • No sooner do we note that El Toro is still on the market than he signs a deal. Pedro Alvarez has reportedly agreed to a minor league contract with Baltimore ($2M guaranteed and another $3.5M available via incentives). The 3B turned 1B will play the OF this time around.
