Buc-Bravos, Arch v Gausman, Lineup & Notes - Freeser, Hechy Gone, Five Guys Called Up

Today: First pitch is at 7:10 with the game aired by AT&T SportsNet & 93.7 The Fan.

Pitchers: RHP Chris Archer (4-7, 4.72) vs. Kevin Gausman (9-9, 3.87) It's a matchup of two guys the Pirates were after at the deadline. Arch is still looking for his first solid start as a Buc; they're trying to get him to buy into the sinker and work inside, two Pirates pitching staples. He's faced Atlanta once this year, going four innings and giving up a run on five hits with three K. Don't let Gausman's line fool ya; he's slashed 4-1/1.69 as a Bravo.  He has a rep as a guy that's stronger in the second half of the season and sure looked it this year. Gausman used his splitter to dominate the Bucs late last month, tossing an eight-inning whitewash with four hits and five whiffs.

Lineup: Starling Marte CF, Adam Frazier 2B, Gregory Polanco RF, Fran Cervelli C, Corey Dickerson LF, J-Bell 1B,Colin Moran 3B, Kevin Newman SS & Archer P. No youth movement yet, except for K-Man.

Notes:
  • The Pirates shipped out veteran infielders David Freese & Adeiny Hechavarria last night for a bit of salary relief and likely to clear the decks for an infield youth movement. The Pirates acquired Dominican League IF Jesus Manuel Valdez, 20, from the Dodgers for Freeser; Valdez appears to be a minor-league depth guy. The Yankees snagged Hechy and cash for a PTBNL/cash return. It helps with the 40-man roster as they can stow a couple of more young 'uns there before Rule 5 time. Oh, and if you were wondering, the team is 9-1/2 games out of the second wild card, so they don't have to fret over a Buctober roster.
  • The first wave of Indy call-ups: RHP Nick Burdi, IF Pablo Reyes, C Jacob Stallings, RHP Dovy Neverauskas and 1B Jose Osuna.
  • Starling Marte went 2-for-4 last night to extend his hitting streak to seven games.
  • Moving up the ladder: The Nightmare's 50 saves as a Pirate ties Jim Gott for 10th on the club’s all-time saves list.
  • S-Rod cleared waivers and was released.
