Saturday Night - Trevor Cahill v Jack Flaherty; Indy, Greensboro Rosters Finalized

Today's Game: The game starts 6:35 and will be carried in AT&T SportsNet PITT2 and 93.7 The Fan. Allegheny Health will be giving out a Wonder Woman bobblehead to the faithful tonight and tomorrow.

Lineup: Adam Frazier 2B; Phil Evans 3B; Bryan Reynolds CF; Colin Moran 3B; Greg Polanco RF; Kevin Newman SS; Ka'ai Tom LF; Michael Perez C and Trevor Cahill P. Perez gets another shot at calling Cahill's game after guiding him through his best outing of the season last time out. Erik Gonzalez gets a blow.

Pitchers: RHP Trevor Cahill (1-2/7.11) goes against RHP Jack Flaherty (4-0/3.18). Trevor, like Mitch Keller, fluctuates between very good and very bad, so we'll see which pitcher shows up tonight. He's faced the Cards 14 times (six starts) and posted a 1-3/4.02 line. Flaherty is St. Louis' main guy, and he's been on a roll the last four games, going undefeated with a 1.50 ERA. He had the Pirates number last year, going 2-0/2.08 with 17 K in 13 IP.

Notes:

  • Keep on rolling: Kevin Newman is on a five game hitting streak.
  • The unearned run the Pirates surrendered in the final frame last night was the first ninth-inning run they've allowed this season.
  • Nope, it's not your imagination: The Cards have bested the Bucs five straight times at PNC Park.
  • The Pirates have announced their AAA Indy Indians roster and the High-A Greensboro Grasshoppers lineup.

Tomorrow's Game: The home stand ends with a 1:05 match featuring Wil Crowe v. Carlos Martinez. The game will be carried by AT&T SportsNet & 93.7 The Fan.

I think I have seen enough of Keller. I get that he has great stuff. Beyond that, he doesn't pass the eyeballs test for me. I suppose, on a team that is not expected to contend, they probably don't have a whole lot to lose by running him out there for two dozen starts or so, but he's not really a rookie any longer and he's not getting it done, overall.

You know the old adage. Some guys need a pat on the back, others need a kick in the pants. I wonder if a ticket back to Indy might be the wakeup call he needs.

They'll throw him out there every fifth day, Will, sink or swim. Him becoming at least a mid rotation arm is part of their rebuild plans, so they'll give him every opp to find out if he can fill the bill.
