Today's Game: The game was delayed 20 minutes for some field mop-up. Maybe a couple of more minutes would have helped as Trevor Cahill gave up a leadoff knock followed by a walk. Two strikeouts later, a broken bat flare made it 1-0 before another K put the frame to bed. Yu Darvish got three Bucco bounce outs on 10 tosses. Cahill put away the bottom of the Friars' order in the second. Jake Stallings doubled after a couple of fly outs and was left aboard. It was another clean inning in the third for Trevor. The Bucs pulled out some two-out magic when Adam Frazier, singled, moved up on a wild pitch and scored easily on Phil Evan's two-bagger to tie it up. The Padres left an opening free pass aboard in the fourth while Pittsburgh went down in order. Cahill K'ed the side around a two-out rap in the fifth. Darvish cruised through his half.

At 82 pitches, Trevor was done and replaced by Luis Oviedo in the sixth. A walk and Wil Myers' blast into the greenery put San Diego up by a pair. A single and double plated another as the Rule 5 righty hit his first rough patch. All the Pirates could muster was a two-out walk. Ovie came back out for the seventh. A walk, single and steal left Padres at second and third with two away before Myers chased home his fourth & fifth RBIs of the night with a single on a pitch that almost clipped him. Michael Feliz came on to end the SD fun. Pittsburgh went down 1-2-3. Feliz returned for the eighth and posted a zero on a hit. Austin Adams was tagged for a one-out triple by Wilmer Difo and Fraze sac fly. Phil dropped a single into center before the third out. Ricard Rodriguez was called in for the ninth (he hasn't tossed since 4/8) and was tapped for a two-out knock, then fanned Myers for a pyrrhic victory of sorts. Kela Keone climbed the hill and gave up an infield rap in an otherwise quiet conclusion.
Yu Darvish controlled the strike zone and Wil Myers, who had six RBI coming into the game, almost doubled that with five more tonight. Ovieda got his inevitable welcome to the big leagues and hopefully it'll smarten him up a little. Onto tomorrow...
Notes:
- Phil Evans had two of the Pirates six hits; no other Bucco reached base more than once.
- Talk about quick turnabouts: Trevor Cahill gave up one run on three hits, two walks, and eight Ks in five IP after surrendering seven runs in four frames of work during his opener.
- Tonight's attendance was 4,068.
- And yes, that was Jerry Meals behind the plate tonight.
Tomorrow's Game: The contest begins at 6:35 and will be on AT&T SportsNet & 93.7 The Fan. Pittsburgh will send out Chad Kuhl to do battle against Blake Snell.
