Pitchers: RHP Trevor Cahill (0-0/15.47) takes on RHP Yu Darvish (0-0/4.22). Trevor was whacked around pretty well by the Reds in his Bucco debut, and we'd guess that he's still not stretched out yet; the regular season is a tough place to find innings. He does have 10 starts and a handful of relief outings against the Padres with a 2-5/3.97 career line. Darvish has two starts without a decision; the long ball has hurt him, as he's given up three bombs in 10-2/3 IP. Yu can still get the ball by ya, though, with 13 K. He's taken on the Buccos six times and posted a 2-2/2.50 line against them. In his lone outing last year, he pitched six innings of scoreless, two-hit ball to top the Pirates by an eventual 6-3 tally.
Notes:
- Guess the "pitch to contact" days are done. Per Fangraphs, so far Pirates pitchers are the second best MLB staff at missing bats.
- Jedd Gyorko was named manager of the West Virginia Black Bears, former Bucco Low A club and current MLB Draft League club. Jedd, a Morgantown native, proves that you can go home again.
- 1B Josh Bell and IF Josh Harrison came off the Nats IL today as their season finally gets to start.
- Ol matey RHP Ivan Nova has reportedly signed a minor league deal with the Rockies.
Tomorrow's Game: The contest begins at 6:35 and will be on AT&T SportsNet & 93.7 The Fan. Pittsburgh will send out Chad Kuhl to do battle against Blake Snell.
