Bucco Bits

-- The Pirates have gone 28 straight innings without scoring against the D-Backs.

-- Andrew McCutchen has the night off. He suffered headaches last night after a swipe tag at first caught him above the eye. It's more of a blow after 50-some consecutive starts than anything else; McCutch says he can pinch hit or go in as a D replacement if needed. Jeff Salazar will take his place in center.

-- Matthew Pouliot of Circling The Bases wonders why the Pirates gave up on Tom Gorzelanny.

-- Shelby Ford, hitting a terrible .188 in Indy, was sent down to AA Altoona. The Curve have needed a second baseman since Jim Negrych went down for the season with hematoma surgery, so Ford will be getting regular at-bats. Pedro Lopez will replace him.

The veteran Lopez (he's had cups of coffee with the White Sox and Reds), 25, hit .261 in an earlier stint at Indy and .263 at Altoona. He's played 2b-SS-3B-LF-RF for the Curve.

-- Jonathan Mayo of MLB.com has the latest on the Miguel Sano saga - and why the Bucs were the only team to offer him a contract.

-- Today in history: In 1921, KDKA aired the first broadcast of a Major League game, as Harold Arlin described the action during the Pirates' 8-5 win over the Phillies at Forbes Field.

What is it with this team? First we make the Brewers look like the Bosox for the better part of 3 or 4 seasons, now it's the Diamondbacks doing their '27 Yankees impression against us.

YOI, is that frustrating!!!

They're playing like a bunch of kids, Will, which is what they are. And the pitching looks like five back of the rotation guys - six innings, three or four runs. They have a lot of growing to do.
